This Weeks Fresh Cut Weekly Feature!: GERBERA, POMPONI
(Thursday, March 16th, while supplies last)
5 for $15 OR 10 for $28
Pomponi Gerbera Daisies are our Feature Flower of the Week! Gerbera Daisies are easily one of the most recognizable flowers, next to classic roses and carnations. But our innovative growers have been getting quite creative with new varieties... Hence, the Pomponi Gerbera Daisy! Still attainable in vivid, vibrant, and super cheerful colors, Pomponi's are fluffier versions of their tradtional Gerbera counterparts, with HUNDREDS of petals per stem (quoted between 500-700)!
It's all in how you say it:
Pronounced: Pomm-pohn-ee JUR-burr-UH (or Gur-Burr-uh)
Symbolism:
Ok. So because we're dealing with a new Hybrid, Pomponi's don't exactly have any specific symbolism just yet. But who cares!? Due to Gerbera's characteristic cheerful disposition and coloring, they are naturals for turning any living space into a warm and welcoming one, and perfect for gifting occasions to brighten someone's day. But, seeing as they are part of the Gerbera Family, Gerbera's symbolize: Innocence, Purity and Cheerfulness.
Some History:
Gerbera's were first found in South Africa in the 1880's by Scotsman Robert Jameson. Breeding programs began in England in the 1890's, but the Gerbera daisy’s popularity soon traveled to growers in the Netherlands which, along with Columbia, is the primary distributor of the flower’s cut version today.
Did You Know? Gerbera daisies, like tulips, will continue to grow taller in your vase even after being cut!
There are many types of flowers which can help to express our thoughts and feelings for our loved ones, but the Gerbera daisy and its meaning stand out as one of the most distinctly bright and merry! Yay, for happy thoughts!
CARING FOR POMPONI GERBERA'S:
1) Fill vase 1/4-1/2 way full, with room temperature water, and mix with provided flower food. Distilled water is preferred for longer lasting blooms.
2) Add a single drop (or two) of bleach (not detergent) to the water to help ward off bacteria.
3) Clip 1" off the stem bottoms on an angle, using a SHARP, CLEAN knife. Cut the stem under water to eliminate the possibility of any possible air bubbles.
4) Change water and re-cut stems on day 3, or when the water is turning yellow or cloudy to prevent bacteria from forming.
5) Display the gerbera daisies in an area with bright but indirect light after they are conditioned. Avoid areas with high heat or freezing temperatures, such as near drafty windows or air vents.
DESIGNING WITH POMPONI GERBERA'S:
Pomponi Gerbera Daisies are excellent for adding character and texture to any bouquet. They can be paired with other spring flowers such as tulips, hyacinth, and ranunculus, but can really be added in to most any design for a pop of color and whimsy. See below for some awesome design ideas!
