PEI’s newest multisport venue officially opens in Summerside
SUMMERSIDE, PE (February 24, 2022) – Prince Edwards Island’s newest piece of sport and recreation infrastructure officially opened today on the grounds at Credit Union Place in Summerside.
The 65,000 square foot air structure is the first of its kind on the Island and will operate year-round to service the demand and long list of minor sport groups, private bookings and general community usage.
“Having this new facility added to the City’s existing sport and recreation infrastructure is monumental for our City,” commented Mayor Basil Stewart. “Summerside has seen extensive growth over the past few years and this facility will certainly be at the forefront of what stands to be a bright future here at Credit Union Place.”
The project has been in the works for almost a decade finally coming to fruition when construction began in June of 2021. The air structure was then inflated late December 2021 with crews working on the finishing touches indoors since that time. As one of the primary venues for the 2023 Canada Winter Games, the facility will have plenty of time for community usage and preparation leading up to next year’s Games.
“Today’s announcement is a big step forward in ensuring Islanders can deliver a top-of-the-podium event while creating a sporting legacy for the entire province,” said Brian McFeely and Wayne Carew, Board Co-Chairs with the 2023 Canada Winter Games. “This state-of-the-art facility is a shining example of our commitment to leaving PEI stronger for having hosted the 2023 Canada Winter Games, and we can’t wait to showcase the Dome to a national audience in 2023.”
Inside The Dome is a 60,000 square foot indoor turf field that stands 85ft high. The turf itself has the markings and infrastructure to host over 18 sport groups and associations, along with endless opportunities when it comes to major sporting events, private bookings and community events.
“This facility will not only be a major asset for Summerside, but the region as a whole,” mentioned JP Desrosiers, Director of Community Services. “Our team within the Community Services Department is excited to take on the operating of this major piece of infrastructure and look towards a bright future along with the growth and expansion of sport and recreation across the region.”
The Dome has seen plenty of interest thus far in regards to bookings and requests. Those interested can do so at: http://www.summersidedome.ca
