The St. John’s Farmers’ Market (SJFM) would like to notify all its customers, vendors, and friends that we will be suspending Saturday Farmers’ Markets for the coming weeks as a precautionary measure against the potential transmission of COVID-19.
When we opened this past Saturday, March 14th, there had yet to be a confirmed case of COVID-19 in this province, yet we were extremely vigilant in ensuring the space was constantly sanitized, and implemented several other measures to protect our customers, vendors, and staff.
Now that there has been a confirmed case in NL, as a large community gathering space, the SJFM recognizes that we have an important role to play in minimizing the risk of potential transmission, and have decided that the most proactive and cautious thing to do would be to suspend operations. .
Most of the larger upcoming rental events booked at SJFM have also chosen to cancel or postpone. To find out if an event you planned on attending has cancelled, please contact the event organizers directly, or the SJFM at 709-221-7536.
While necessary, this decision was not made lightly. This shut-down, even temporarily, will have a significant impact on the St. John’s Farmers’ Market, which is a non-profit that relies on income from our markets and rentals to operate. In addition, it will have a profound effect on the more than 170 small businesses that we support and who operate out of the SJFM on a rotational basis. For some, operating their business through the Farmers’ Market is their only source of income and losing these weeks will have long-lasting consequences.
We would encourage all friends and supporters of the Market, to consider reaching out to your favourite vendors at this time to see if there may be a way to purchase goods directly from them, or if they may have alternate points of sale. You can find contacts for many of our vendors on the SJFM website at http://stjohnsfarmersmarket.ca/vendors/ or by calling us at 709-221-7536.
We have seen how truly supportive this community can be when we all come together, and now in this time of social distancing, we need each other more than ever.
We will be posting updates on re-opening status when we know anything further. In the meantime, if you have questions or concerns, please let us know.
