We start with Falstaff's plan to woo two of the village's most esteemed married women so as to divest them of their riches. When both women and the rest of the town start to discover his dastardly ways, they devise a set of hilarious schemes to humiliate him and teach him a lesson about toying with sin.
The sets are beautiful, particularly the end scene in the forest, where the ghostly trees stand eerily in the mists surrounded by fairies, sprites and elves. Sung in Italian, English subtitles are projected above the stage so you can keep up with the story. While you're putting it all together, take a moment to appreciate the sheer power of the voices of the performers. They are mesmerizing.
If you've ever wondered about the opera, but weren't sure where to start, Falstaff's silly fun is a perfect entry point to the art form.
Falstaff runs November 22 & 25. Get your tickets today! And don't forget to check out the Winnipeg Culture Pass and Culture on Every Corner for deals to local cultural attractions.
