International politicos, history buffs, and Royal Family fans will undoubtedly love it, and even those who appreciate masterful storytelling will be enthralled by how the plot skips back and forth between times in government, weaving in important headlines of the day. The plot is dialogue driven, so sets are sparse, movement is minimal, and the pacing is, well, fit for the Queen.
The most poignant moments are when the conversations stray beyond the business, and the Queen and her Prime Ministers share personal stories(think childhood memories, confessions of doubt, questions of health), reminding us that behind the pomp and circumstance, humans crave connection.
Also at the play’s heart is the question of the relevancy of a monarchy and the Commonwealth, and how it shapes a woman’s struggle with personal significance.
The Audience is on now until December 17. Get your tickets today! And don’t forget to check out the Winnipeg Culture Pass and Culture on Every Corner for deal to local cultural attractions.
