Adyson Leaman - #88 defenseman for 2006 NB ICE, President of Ady's Jerky Stix
Adyson started playing hockey as soon as he could, he had been attending several hockey games since he was a baby with his grandparents. We soon discovered that this sport complemented who he truly is as a person; a young leader and someone who truly enjoys being part of something bigger than himself - learning the value of being on a team. Both on & off the ice, Adyson learned at a young age to take care of others, be accountable, responsible, and commit to being the best you can be for the better of the entire team- including his first team in life - his family. At 6 years old he attended his first hockey school - Andrews Hockey School on PEI - a week of life lessons, on & off ice character and game development that he brings to his daily life - it changed what was a love for the game - to a PASSION. He came home that summer and was forever changed- he worked harder at his schooling, reading and helping around the house to save money for his sport. One of Alan Andrews's first question when meeting Adyson was: "What are you doing to reach your goals off the ice: what books are you reading, how is your nutrition, are you helping your parents by saving money to play this game - and he's since become truly involved in reaching his goals.
He decided to use another passion he had to help further fund his personal goals; Beef Jerky. Growing up, one of Ady's favorite treats was going to his Pappy's place and sampling his homemade jerky. We had always told him that to become an entrepreneur - you need to do something you love - and his adventure began; Ady's Jerky Stix was born in Summer 2014 at the ripe young age of 8 years old. His first big break was pitching his business to our seasonal campground owner to be able to sell his jerky in her canteen and around the park -that summer he earned enough money to pay for his minor hockey fees & tournaments. In the fall of 2014, he met the owners of Sculpt Health Centers, and they invited Ady to bring his jerky to their store, as a healthy snack for their clients - another goal was achieved - he managed to save enough to pay for 1 week at Andrews Hockey School. Through the winter & Spring, he continues to make his Jerky, bringing it to his hockey teams, tournaments, becoming the first youth vendor at the Shediac Park Market in the summer months.
Through his business, he enjoys meeting friends from all over the Maritimes, other countries at the farmer's market and at hockey school, and has learned to work hard, and understand the meaning of commitment. Last summer during Hockey School on PEI, he learned of a young player who had been recently diagnose with a rare & aggressive form of cancer, he told his parents that he had achieved his goal of being at camp- and "what if my jerky sales could help the Fundraiser for Griffin?". He managed to raise $300 for the fundraiser, with overwhelming support from fellow players, parents and the PEI Family Community he has grown to love - a new life lesson of giving back! Just a few weeks ago, during the 2016/17 Spring Season 1st Annual NB ICE Golf Tournament - he signed up as a company sponsor and contributed $150 to his NB ICE team to help with season expenses.
Adyson is always asked why do you work at 10 years old? His answer is always: "My passion is hockey; I also love Beef Jerky, by combining the two I am able to contribute to my Dreams!" He is learning about business, giving back to charity and going to camp all at the same time!
His dream is to continue his training this year and next summer, and work towards becoming a junior instructor for Andrews Hockey - to help other kids be passionate about achieving their goals.
